Program Overview
Graduate French programs offer opportunities for advanced study in the language and literatures of France and Québec, as well as in African and Caribbean literatures in French.
The UBC Library and the Departmental Reading Room have extensive holdings in French.
The program makes available a list of courses to be offered as early as possible, usually in February of the preceding academic year.
Doctor of Philosophy
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the Ph.D. degree program normally possess an M.A. degree in French or a related area, with clear evidence of research ability or potential. Transfer from the M.A. to the Ph.D. program is permitted under regulations set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies. Part-time Doctoral Classification is also available. Students who wish to be classified as part-time must obtain approval from their proposed supervisor and graduate program advisor as part of the admission process.
Program Requirements
The Ph.D. program consists of coursework, comprehensive examination, the PhD thesis proposal defense, and research leading to a dissertation that is defended in a final oral examination. For details on regulations, visit the Department.
Master of Arts
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the M.A. degree program normally possess a B.A. degree in French or a related area, and must meet the general admission requirements for master's degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Program Requirements
There are two options for the M.A.:
- M.A. with Thesis. This option requires 24 credits of coursework numbered 500 and above in literature or linguistics given in French, including FREN 591 and FREN 592, and a 6-credit thesis followed by an oral thesis defense.
- Course-based M.A. This option requires 30 credits of coursework, up to 3 of which may be drawn from 400-level undergraduate courses in literature or linguistics given in French.
