Program Overview
The Department of Linguistics offers degree programs leading to both the Master of Arts (M.A.) and to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). For the Ph.D. in Linguistics students can register in one of two streams:
- the Linguistics stream covers the core areas of phonetics, phonology, semantics, and syntax with the possibility of specializing in First Nations languages, African languages, first language acquisition, and experimental linguistics
- the Cognitive Systems stream proceeds from the core areas of linguistics to specialized interaction with other disciplines such as art, computer science, music, philosophy, and psychology

Doctor of Philosophy
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the Ph.D. program normally possess a master's degree in Linguistics or a related area, with clear evidence of research ability or potential. Transfer from the master's to the Ph.D. program is permitted under regulations set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Exceptional students may be admitted directly to the Ph.D. program from the bachelor's level.
Program Requirements
Coursework is selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee and the program's graduate advisor. All doctoral students are required to successfully complete two qualifying papers. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements. For detailed information, please visit the Program.
Master of Arts
Admission Requirements
Students admitted to the M.A. degree program normally possess a bachelor's degree and have substantial preparation in linguistics and linguistic theory, although it is possible to apply for the graduate program with an undergraduate degree in another subject area. Applicants must meet the general admission requirements for master's degree programs set by the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Program Requirements
An M.A. in Linguistics is a 30-credit degree program and may be obtained on a full-time or part-time basis; both thesis and course-based options are possible.
