Program Requirements

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The M.Sc. degree requires completion of HMKN 501 and HMKN 506, an 18-credit lab-based or fieldwork research thesis (HMKN 549), and a minimum of 9 additional credits of coursework. Students must obtain an overall average of 76% or higher.

Elective course(s) must be approved by the student's supervisory committee. The supervisory committee may require additional coursework, if this is necessary for successful completion of the thesis research.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

Coursework is selected in consultation with the student's supervisory committee. Ph.D. students are not required to complete any coursework outside of the dissertation unless: 1) required by the supervisory committee, or 2) required as a condition of admission.

All doctoral students are required to successfully complete a comprehensive examination within 36 months of their enrolment in the Ph.D. program. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation (HMKN649), meeting the College of Graduate Studies requirements.
