Pre-Med Alternative Path (P-MAP)

This alternative path is intended for students with an engineering background wishing to apply to UBC’s medical school and potentially others. It provides access to courses strongly recommended by many medical schools for students to be considered for admission.

Different medical schools have different course requirements. Students are strongly advised to verify the course requirements with prospective medical schools. It should also be noted that the course requirements are only one of the criteria used by medical schools to assess applications. It is the student's responsibility to be informed of the applicable criteria.

The ten P-MAP courses are integrated into the existing three engineering programs, and are taken in parallel with engineering courses. Four are counted toward engineering requirements:

  • ENGL 112 (in place of APSC 176)
  • CHEM 121 & 123 (in place of APSC 182 & 183)
  • ENGL 150, 151 or 153 (in place of humanities credit)

Six are in addition to engineering courses:

  • BIOL 116
  • BIOL 125
  • BIOL 311
  • BIOL 319
  • CHEM 213
  • CHEM 214

Given the additional courses taken over and above the engineering degree, students should on average expect an additional term to complete these course requirements along with their engineering degree requirements. Some courses may be offered in the Summer Session.
