Student Fees

Fees, including tuition, program, course, special, and student society fees, are approved by the Board of Governors following consultation with students and are subject to change.

Student fees include fees authorized by student referendum, the UBC Board of Governors, the Alma Mater Society (AMS), and other student societies and organizations. AMS fees are collected by the University at the request of the organization. Student fees are subject to the following annual maximum for the period of September 1 to August 31, and are charged to all students. Fees are calculated according to full-time or part-time status, session, and study level.

1 Athletics and Recreation fee is authorized by the Board of Governors and is used to support athletic and recreation programs and facilities. This fee is tax deductible and will be included in the T2202A tax receipt.
2 SUB Renewal Fee is used to support the construction of the new Student Union Building.
3 The U-Pass provides all zone unlimited access to public transit, and is charged to eligible students enrolled in the Winter and Summer Sessions and who are members of the AMS. The U-Pass for the Summer Session is assessed at $41.00 per month, starting May 2017. The U-Pass program has limited opt-out provisions (opt-out applications are available at the Student Service Centre). Refer to U-Pass for more information.
4 This fee is assessed to all students in Winter Session who are registered in the final year of a course leading to a bachelor’s degree, the M.D., the D.M.D., the J.D., or the B.Ed., and who have not previously paid the fee. This fee is for the support of student-sponsored graduating class activities. This fee is tax deductible and will be included in the T2202A tax receipt.

Additional AMS Fees with Opt-out Provisions

All students assessed the AMS and Graduate Student Society (GSS) fees (regardless of credit load or place of residence) will be assessed the following additional AMS fees for the period of September 1 to August 31.

1 AMS/GSS Health and Dental Insurance provides coverage for expenses such as most prescription drugs, travel health insurance, vision, and dental care, in addition to basic medical covered by MSP. The fee is assessed only in the Winter Session and provides coverage from September 1 to August 31. Students beginning their studies in January will be assessed $154.99 and will be covered from January 1 to August 31. Please visit ihaveaplan.ca for information on Change-of-Coverage Period to determine when opt-outs or new enrolments can be made.
2 Students who wish to opt out of the AMS Resource Groups Fee may apply in person with their student cards to the AMS Administration Office, Room 3500 on the third floor of the AMS Student Nest, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm, or online through http://www.ams.ubc.ca/leadership/commissions/finance-commission/students. Students registered in one term of Winter Session or either term of Summer Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes. Students registered in both terms of Winter Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes in Term 1 (September 8-22, 2017).
3 Students who wish to opt out of the Bike Kitchen may apply in person with their student cards to the Bike Kitchen Offices in the Student Union Building, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Students registered in one term of Winter Session or either term of Summer Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes. Students registered in both terms of Winter Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes in Term 1 (September 8-22, 2017).
4 Students who wish to opt out of the CiTR Radio may apply in person with their student cards to the CiTR Radio Offices in Room LL 511, in the lower level of the Nest, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Students registered in one term of Winter Session or either term of Summer Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes. Students registered in both terms of Winter Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes in Term 1 (September 8-22, 2017).
5 Students who wish to opt out of the Campus Culture and Performance Fee may apply online through http://www.ams.ubc.ca/leadership/commissions/financecommission/students. Students registered in one term of Winter Session or either term of Summer Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes. Students registered in both terms of Winter Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes in Term 1 (September 8-22, 2017).
6 iMED provides basic health insurance for all new international students. It covers emergency hospitalization and medical services (including doctor’s visits) for unexpected sickness or injury. The monthly rate is available for visiting international research students only (up to 6 months). A fraction of a month will be considered a full month.
7 Ubyssey Publication Fee is used to fund the operation of The Ubyssey Newspaper. Students who wish to opt out of this fee may do so by applying in person with their student cards to The Ubyssey Publications Society Business Office, in Room 2208, on the second floor of the Nest, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday in the first two weeks of classes only, and fill out a Ubyssey Opt-Out Form. Students registered in one term of Winter Session or either term of Summer Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes. Students registered in both terms of the Winter Session must apply by the end of the second week of classes in Term 1 (September 8-22, 2017).

Summer Session Fees

Summer Session students who have not paid the maximum Athletics and Recreation fees for the Winter Session will be assessed either the difference between the Winter Session assessment and the maximum of the assessment based on the Summer credits, or the maximum of the assessment based on the Summer credits, whichever is less. Summer session students who have paid AMS student fees for the immediately preceding Winter Session will not be assessed additional fees, except for U-Pass. Summer session students who are not registered in the immediately preceding Winter Session would be assessed at 50% of the AMS Student Fees with No Opt-out Provisions with the exception of the Student Legal Fund which is assessed at the annual rate and U-Pass which is assessed monthly.

The AMS fees are exclusive of the Health and Dental Plan fee that is available only for students who were registered in the preceding Winter Session.
