  1. ENGL 100 (3) Reading and Writing about Language and Literatures

    A writing-intensive introduction to language and literary studies through the exploration of texts in their critical and theoretical contexts. Fulfills the first-year component of the Faculty of Arts Writing and Research Requirement. Open only to students in the Faculty of Arts. Recommended for students intending to become English majors. Essays are required. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  2. ENGL 110 (3) Approaches to Literature and Culture

    Study of selected examples of literary and cultural expression: examples may include poetry, fiction, drama, life narratives, essays, graphic novels, screenplays, and narrative adaptations in film and other media. Essays are required. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  3. ENGL 111 (3) Approaches to Language and Communication

    Study of selected communication genres from a language-based perspective: examples may include non-fiction, science writing, business discourse, journalism, language of the internet, podcasts, and other media. Essays are required. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  4. ENGL 120 (3) Literature and Criticism

    Enriched study of selected works of literature from a number of critical perspectives. Open to students with a BC-equivalent mark of "A" (86%) in English 12 or "B+" (80%) in English Literature 12. Essays are required. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  5. ENGL 121 (3) Introduction to Literary Theory

    Enriched study of various theories of literature. Open to students with a BC-equivalent mark of "A" (86%) in English 12 or "B+" (80%) in English Literature 12. Essays are required. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  6. ENGL 140 (3) Challenging Language Myths

    Critical consideration of a broad range of commonly held beliefs about language and its relation to the brain and cognition, learning, society, change and evolution. Note: This is an elective course that does not fulfill writing requirements in any faculty or the literature requirement in the Faculty of Arts. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

  7. ENGL 200 (3) Principles of Literary Studies

    A collaboratively-taught exploration and application of key scholarly, theoretical and critical approaches informing the study of literatures in English.
