CAPS: Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences


  1. CAPS 200 (3) Biomedical Research: Essential Skills and Concepts

    Analysis of the underlying questions and assumptions, experimental approach, results and significance of work described in selected biomedical research presentations. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: BIOL 200. Limited to students in second year.

  2. CAPS 205 (3) Fundamentals of Physiology in Human Health and Disease I

    The principles of physiological regulation of neuromuscular, cardiovascular and blood systems in the human body with practical applications in health and disease. Credit will only be granted for one of CAPS 301 or CAPS 205. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: All of BIOL 112, CHEM 123, MATH 101 and 100-level PHYS beyond PHYS 100.

  3. CAPS 206 (3) Fundamentals of Physiology in Human Health and Disease II

    The principles of physiological regulation of respiratory, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine and reproductive systems in the human body with practical applications in health and disease. Credit will only be granted for one of CAPS 301 or CAPS 206. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: All of BIOL 112, CHEM 123, MATH 101 and 100-level PHYS beyond PHYS 100.

  4. CAPS 210 (3) Human Health Literacy

    An on-line course teaching students to research and understand relevant health diagnoses. Not for students with Biology 12, Anatomy and Physiology 12, or enrolled in the Faculties of Science, Land and Food Systems, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Applied Science or School of Kinesiology. [3-0-0]

  5. CAPS 301 (6) Human Physiology

    Organ systems function with particular reference to mammalian and human physiology. Credit will only be granted for one of CAPS 301 or CAPS 205. Credit will only be granted for one of CAPS 301 or CAPS 206. [3-0-0;3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: Either (a) SCIE 001 or (b) all of BIOL 112, BIOL 121 and one of MATH 101, MATH 103, MATH 105, MATH 121 and one of PHYS 100, PHYS 101, PHYS 107, PHYS 117, PHYS 131 and one of CHEM 203, CHEM 233, CHEM 260.

  6. CAPS 302 (3) Human Physiology Laboratory

    Physiological techniques and principles. Must be taken in conjunction with CAPS 301. Enrolment limited. Available only to students in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. [0(3)]

  7. CAPS 303 (3) Laboratory in Human Physiology

    Techniques and principles of human physiology. This course must be taken in conjunction with CAPS 301. Restricted to Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences and Pharmacology students. [1-4-0]

    Corequisite: One of CAPS 305, CAPS 301.

  8. CAPS 390 (3) Introduction to Microscopic Human Anatomy

    Organ system development, structure and function at the microscopic level. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: One of BIOL 121, SCIE 001. BIOL 200 is recommended.

  9. CAPS 391 (3) Introduction to Gross Human Anatomy

    Structure and function of body regions at the macroscopic level. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: One of BIOL 121, SCIE 001, KIN 190, KIN 191.

  10. CAPS 398 (3) Cooperative Work Placement

    Approved and supervised relevant work experience in an industrial, academic, or government setting for a minimum of 13 weeks full-time. Work term report required. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Option in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences (B.Sc.). This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: All of CAPS 205, CAPS 303 and one of CAPS 206, CAPS 301.

  11. CAPS 399 (3) Cooperative Work Placement II

    Approved and supervised relevant work experience in an industrial, academic, or government setting for a minimum of 13 weeks full-time. Work term report required. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Option in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences (B.Sc.). This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: CAPS 398.

  12. CAPS 421 (3) Cell Biology and Human Disease

    Outlines major discoveries and current advancements that are revolutionizing our understanding of subcellular structures and function in health and disease, such as cancer. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: Either (a) all of CAPS 306, CAPS 310 or (b) one of CAPS 301, NSCI 300.

  13. CAPS 422 (3) Mammalian Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology

    The control and integration of cardio-pulmonary function in mammals. Intended for Honours students in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences or other life sciences. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: A cumulative average of 75% over at least 90 credits attempted in the first three years of a student's program and a minimum mark of 75% in CAPS 301 or PHYL 301 or its equivalent. Permission of the course director is also required.

  14. CAPS 423 (3) Human Renal and Gastrointestinal Physiology

    Control of human renal and gastrointestinal systems. Role in homeostasis in health and disease. Intended for students in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences or other life sciences. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: Either (a) all of CAPS 305, CAPS 306 or (b) CAPS 301.

  15. CAPS 424 (3) Mammalian Endocrinology

    Hormonal control of homeostatic, metabolic and reproductive function. Intended for Honours students in Cellular, Anatomical and Physiological Sciences or other life sciences. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: A cumulative average of 75% over at least 90 credits attempted in the first three years of a student's program and a minimum mark of 75% in CAPS 301 or PHYL 301. Permission of the course director is also required.

  16. CAPS 426 (3) Nervous System Function in Human Health and Disease

    An integrated study of the theory and experimental findings of neuronal synaptic plasticity, including underlying molecular mechanisms and their role in cellular systems, cognitive biology and disease. [3-0-0]

    Prerequisite: One of CAPS 305, CAPS 301, NSCI 300.

  17. CAPS 430 (6) Advanced Laboratory in Physiology

    Methods, techniques, and use of instruments required for physiological investigation. CAPS 303 or PHYL 303 and the consent of the department are required and enrolment will be limited. [0-6]

  18. CAPS 431 (3) Advanced Laboratory in the Physiology of Human Health and Disease

    Techniques relevant to human genetics and physiology in the assessment of human health and disease. This course is restricted to CAPS students. [1-4-0]

    Prerequisite: CAPS 303.

  19. CAPS 448 (2-6) c Directed Studies in Physiology

  20. CAPS 449 (6) Graduating Essay

    Written report and presentation on an independent investigaton approved by the department head.

  21. CAPS 498 (3) Cooperative Work Placement III
