Modern European Studies

Modern European Studies is an undergraduate interdisciplinary program administered by the Modern European Studies Steering Committee through the Department of Central, Eastern, and Northern European Studies.

Major in Modern European Studies

Lower-level Requirements

  • 6 credits from CENS 201, CENS 202, HIST 220, or Arts One.

Upper-level Requirements

Students complete at least 30 credits at the upper-level, including:

  • 6 credits from: CENS 303, CENS 404, HIST 369, HIST 370;
  • 3 credits from: CENS 303, CENS 404, HIST 367, HIST 368, or another course in European history as designated for a particular year by the Program Chair;
  • At least 6 credits from each of Lists A (History), B (Social Sciences), and C (Literature and Culture) (see below); and
  • 3 credits from any of List A, B, or C.

Language Requirement

Students are required to take 12 credits of a European language other than English, in addition to the Bachelor of Arts language requirement. The language can be the one used to satisfy the Bachelor of Arts language requirement carried to a higher level (with literature courses in that language counting as equivalent), or it can be another language. RMST 478 is also acceptable.
