Film Production

The Department of Theatre and Film offers the program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production, consisting of three years of concentrated study.

In this program, students learn the techniques, practices, and theory of filmmaking. There are options to study more deeply in the areas of documentary filmmaking, alternative cinema, and screenwriting.

Students must apply to enter this program at the end of their first year of studies.

The number of available places is strictly limited: application and submission of supporting materials is required. Preference will be given to students with strong evidence of creative ability. Prospective applicants should consult the Film Program website concerning admission requirements, application deadline, and current course offerings, or contact the Film Program office.

All students enrolled in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program will be reviewed annually to determine whether they should continue in their course of study.

First Year

Faculty of Arts requirements, FIST 100 (with a minimum mark of 72%).

Second Year

Upon acceptance into the BFA: FIPR 230, 233, 234, CRWR 206, 306, and 6 credits from FIST 200-level courses.

A minimum average of 72% for all courses is required to advance to third year.

Third Year

Required courses are: FIPR 333, 337, 338, 339, and at least 3 Film Studies credits chosen from FIST 300, 331, 332, 334, 336, 338, 430, 432, 434, 436, 438, ASIA 354, 355, 356, ITST 432, MUSC 345, SCAN 411, SLAV 307, SPAN 404, THTR 443.

Additional courses may be approved on a year-to-year basis.

During the third and fourth years of the degree, students must also complete a minimum of 9 credits from FIPR 330, 399, 434, 435, 436, 437, 439.

Fourth Year

Required courses are: FIPR 433 plus 9 credits from FIPR 434, 435, 436, 437, 439, and at least 3 credits chosen from FIST 300, 331, 332, 334, 336, 338, 430, 432, 434, 436, 438, ASIA 354, 355, 356, ITST 432, MUSC 345, SCAN 411, SLAV 307, SPAN 404, THTR 443.

Additional courses may be approved on a year-to-year basis.

A minimum of 60 credits are required for the degree, at least 30 of which must be 300-level or above. Students must achieve a minimum grade average of 67% for these 60 credits.

It is highly recommended that students complete at least 12 credits in Fine and Performing Arts outside of the main curriculum.

Recommended courses: CRWR 406, 409, 414, FIPR 235, 299, 399 THTR 230, 299, 301, 308, 399, 408, 417, VISA 110, 240, 310, 340, MUSC 328, 319, 321, 326, 417, 469.

Screenwriting Option

B.F.A. Film Production students wishing to specialize in screenwriting may apply via portfolio to complete 6-12 additional credits in CRWR 406, 409 and CRWR 414.
