Program Overview

Potential scholars interested in pursuing graduate studies in rehabilitation science have four options at UBC. These include a Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Science, Master of Rehabilitation Science, or a Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Ph.D. program offers opportunities for advanced research and original investigation in Rehabilitation Sciences. It prepares rehabilitation scholars and scientists for leadership roles in academia, public health, education, and industry.

Admission Requirements

A master's degree in rehabilitation sciences, or other related fields of study along with appropriate undergraduate and graduate courses, is required for admission. Applicants from non-Canadian or non-United States universities are generally required to provide general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores as part of their application, though in certain cases this requirement could be waived. Prospective applicants are advised to consult with their proposed supervising faculty member.

Students must contact one or more potential faculty supervisors to discuss their research interests prior to the application deadline. Transfer from the M.Sc. to the Ph.D. program is permitted under Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies regulations.

Part-time Doctoral Classification is also available. Students who wish to be classified as part-time must obtain approval from their proposed supervisor and graduate program advisor as part of the admission process.

Program Requirements

The program may be pursued by full or part-time students. Appropriate coursework is selected in consultation with the student's committee. All students are required to complete a written and oral comprehensive examination after completion of program coursework. Following the comprehensive exam, students present a formal dissertation proposal for approval by the supervisory committee before proceeding to the research which will culminate in a final oral examination. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements.

Master of Physical Therapy (M.P.T.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Rehabilitation Sciences Dual Degrees Program Option

For details, see the M.P.T./Ph.D. program option.

Master of Science

The Master of Science (M.Sc.) program prepares individuals to conduct research independently and in collaboration with other scientists. Students investigate an area of research relevant to rehabilitation through critical analysis of problems related to basic sciences, clinical practice, or to development of theory.

Admission Requirements

Minimum admission requirements include a degree in occupational therapy, physical therapy, or a related rehabilitation profession, an academic record that meets the requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, and completion of a minimum of a 3-credit introductory course in research methods and/or analysis. Applicants from non-Canadian or non-United States universities are generally required to provide general Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores as part of their application, though in certain cases this requirement could be waived. Prospective applicants are advised to consult with their proposed supervising faculty member. Preference will be given to applicants who hold degrees in occupational or physical therapy, are qualified to practice their rehabilitation profession in British Columbia, and who have had recent clinical experience providing rehabilitation care.

Program Requirements

The program may be pursued by full or part-time students. Full-time study would normally require approximately 24 months, including completion of the thesis. A minimum of 30 credits is required for the degree. This consists of 6 credits of required coursework in the Graduate Programs in Rehabilitation Sciences at the 500-level, an 18-credit thesis RHSC 549, and 6 elective credits. The elective credits may be selected from courses offered within the Program or from other academic units.

The specific courses taken will depend on the area of research chosen, in consultation with a research supervisor. Once accepted, each student must have a plan of studies approved by their research supervisor and supervisory committee.

Master of Rehabilitation Science

The Master of Rehabilitation Science (M.R.Sc.), unlike traditional thesis-based research master's programs, is a combination of required and elective courses that include the option of completing a work- or practice-based research project. It is delivered online with part-time options to meet the needs of working health professionals.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the admissions requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Admission is offered on a competitive basis, using the following guidelines:

  • Degree: Completion of a recognized four-year baccalaureate degree at an accredited academic institution.
  • Prior Education and Experience: Applicants must be an occupational therapist, physical therapist or rehabilitation practitioner in a related health and human services discipline. At least three years of rehabilitation work experience will be an asset.

Program Requirements

The Master of Rehabilitation Science (M.R.Sc.) is a 30-credit, non-thesis, online master's degree program. In addition to requiring the five graduate courses in the Graduate Certificate in Rehabilitation (RHSC 501, 503, 505, 507, 509), or the five courses in the Graduate Certificate in Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy (RHSC 501, PHTH 580, PHTH 581, RHSC 587, RHSC 589), learners will complete additional RHSC electives for a total of 30 credits.

This master's degree program has been designed for occupational therapists, physical therapists and other health professionals with a baccalaureate degree who have already established their eligibility to practice in their discipline but want advanced knowledge to inform their practice.

Recommended: Completion of an introductory course in statistics.
