UBC Extended Learning offers online and in-class non-credit courses in nine languages. Small class sizes and experienced, expert instructors, offer an immersive educational experience to help you learn the language as you live the culture.

Languages currently offered are:

DutchItalianMandarin
FrenchJapanesePortuguese
GermanKoreanSpanish

UBC Extended Learning’s instructional approach is based on the immersion philosophy, which means learning to converse and communicate in a natural setting. Students practice and use the language as it occurs in real life. Authentic materials, audio and visual clips, as well as activities such as role-playing, teamwork, game playing, presentations, songs and dances support learning. Students can access additional online course material outside the virtual or physical classroom in the Canvas learning management system. Our online reading and writing courses in French, Spanish and Chinese characters are an excellent option if you have completed two or more conversational courses. Advanced reading and writing courses are perfect for learners who consider themselves verbally fluent, or who spoke the language at home or studied it in school.

Conversational courses are offered fully online in virtual classes, or evenings and weekends at UBC Robson Square in downtown Vancouver. In the summer, we offer full-time and intensive programs in French and Spanish.
