LFS: Land & Food Systems

As of July 1, 2015, the IHHS courses have been distributed among the following units: School of Social Work, School of Population and Public Health, and Faculty of Land and Food Systems.


  1. LFS 100 (1) Introduction to Land, Food and Community

    Orientation to the programs, learning environment and core values of the Faculty of Land and Food Systems; career programs; survey of professional opportunities and requirements. [1-0-0]

  2. LFS 101 (3) Principles of Microeconomics with Applications to Land and Food Systems

    Microeconomic principles focused on private and social decision making related to the use of land, especially in agriculture, forestry, and conservation. Restricted to Faculty of Land and Food Systems students in Land One Option. Credit will be granted for only one of FRST 101, LFS 101, ECON 101, or ECON 310 This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Equivalency: FRST 101, ECON 101.

  3. LFS 110 (3) Land One: First-year Integrative Seminar

    Current issues and cases in Forestry and Land and Food Systems are examined with a focus on integration of first-year subjects and exposure to both Indigenous and Western perspectives. Restricted to Faculty of Land and Food Systems students in the Land One option. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Equivalency: FRST 110.

  4. LFS 150 (3) Scholarly Writing and Argumentation in Land and Food Systems

    Communicating concepts of food systems and links to human and environmental health through writing, elements of argumentation, evaluating evidence, and searching for and citing references to back up claims; small-class experience. Enrolment limited to LFS students with first year status. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Equivalency: FRST 150.

  5. LFS 250 (6) Land, Food and Community I: Introduction to Food Systems and Sustainability

    Managed systems and concepts of sustainability; economic, ecological and social components; managed landscapes, agri-food systems, and communities; urban and rural systems; the land, food, nutrition and human health continuum.

  6. LFS 252 (3) Land, Food, and Community: Quantitative Data Analysis

    Introduction to tools needed for data analysis of the economic, ecological, health, and scientific components of land and food systems. [3-0-1]

    Prerequisite: One of MATH 100, MATH 102, MATH 104, MATH 110, MATH 120, MATH 180, MATH 184.

  7. LFS 301 (3) Aquaculture Field Studies

    An orientation to the aquaculture system in BC. Participating students are assessed a fee.

  8. LFS 302 (3/6) d International Field Studies

    Field studies carried out abroad under staff direction. Participating students are assessed a fee.

  9. LFS 303 (6) International Field Studies in Policy Analysis for Agriculture and Natural Resources

    Field studies carried out abroad under the direction of the instructor. Students will be guided to apply selected tools for analysis of agricultural and natural resource policy in developing countries with input from local policymakers. Participating students are assessed a fee. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: One of ECON 101, LFS 101. Third-year standing and permission of instructor. 9 credits of upper level ECON, FRE or COMM courses are strongly recommended.

  10. LFS 340 (3) First Nations Health and the Traditional Role of Plants

    This Interprofessional Health and Human Service (IHHS) course covers the First Nations medical systems and medicinal plants. Bridging the traditional with modern sciences. Credit will be granted for only one of LFS 340 or IHHS 301.

  11. LFS 350 (3) Land, Food, and Community II: Principles and Practice of Community Food Security

    Project-based application of the principles and processes of community food security. Emphasis on developing skills required to address economic, ecological, social, and technological components of managed landscapes, agri-food systems, and communities comprising the land, food, nutrition and health continuum.

    Prerequisite: LFS 250.

  12. LFS 398 (3) Co-operative Work Placement I

    Work experience in relevant private and/or public sector settings. Work terms are normally four months long. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Program in Land and Food Systems. Pass/Fail. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: Must attend all Co-op pre-employment workshops.

  13. LFS 399 (3) Co-operative Work Placement II

    Work experience in relevant private and/or public sector settings. Work terms are normally four months long. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Program in Land and Food Systems. Pass/Fail. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: LFS 398.

  14. LFS 400 (3) Audio Storytelling

    Adopts a journalistic framework to communicate powerful stories and present academic content in new ways through the use of audio and podcasting technology.

    Prerequisite: Third-year standing or higher.

  15. LFS 402 (3) Living Language: Science and Society

    Multidisciplinary course in which students, individually and in groups, examine, integrate and apply subject-specific knowledge through the lens of language and the framework of the language sciences, with a focus on themes of real-world importance.

    Prerequisite: Fourth-year standing or permission of the instructor.

    Equivalency: APSC 402, ASTU 402, FRST 402, LLED 402, PHAR 402.

  16. LFS 450 (3) Land, Food, and Community III: Leadership in Campus Food System Sustainability

    Design, analysis, recommendation or implementation of solutions in response to a food sustainability issue faced by community partners. Emphasis is on professional communication, leadership development, project management and decision-making skills.

  17. LFS 490 (3) Topics in Land and Food Systems

    Analysis and interpretation of current issues related to land and food systems.

  18. LFS 496 (3/6) d Career Development Practicum

    Practical application of degree program learning appropriate to students' career goals. Enrolment subject to competition and availability of practicum placements.

  19. LFS 498 (3) Co-operative Work Placement III

    Work experience in relevant private and/or public sector settings. Work terms are normally four months long. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Program in Land and Food Systems. Pass/Fail. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: LFS 399.

  20. LFS 499 (3) Co-operative Work Placement IV

    Work experience in relevant private and/or public sector settings. Work terms are normally four months long. Restricted to students admitted to the Co-op Program in Land and Food Systems. Pass/Fail. This course is not eligible for Credit/D/Fail grading.

    Prerequisite: LFS 498.
