Program Overview

The Department of Chemistry offers a wide variety of research programs leading to degrees of M.Sc. and Ph.D. across the full breadth of chemistry, including inorganic, organic, analytical, biological, physical, theoretical, nuclear, environmental, and materials chemistry.

These programs are supported by an extensive in-house service infrastructure, the TRIUMF cyclotron, and radioactive beams facility (ISAC), as well as support personnel and cutting-edge research equipment.

Research facilities can accommodate over 300 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and academic staff.

Doctor of Philosophy

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to hold an M.Sc. or equivalent in chemistry, biochemistry, physics, or related fields or a B.Sc. with a 86% average in an honours or combined honours chemistry program or equivalent. Students in the M.Sc. program may transfer into the Ph.D. program at the end of their first year, provided they meet the transfer requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and the Department.

Program Requirements

Coursework in the Ph.D. program is assigned in accordance with the recommendation of the Department and the student's supervisory committee.

All doctoral students are required to successfully complete a comprehensive examination. The major requirement for the Ph.D. is completion of a research dissertation meeting the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies requirements.

Master of Science

Admission Requirements

Applicants are required to hold: an honours degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or physics, or a combined honours degree in chemistry and physics, chemistry and mathematics, chemistry and biochemistry, chemistry and oceanography, or chemistry and biology; or a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering with at least second class standing; or a single major in chemistry with at least second class standing; or the equivalent to any of the above.

Program Requirements

The program requires a thesis and 12 credits of graduate or advanced courses in chemistry and/or related subjects.

International Three-Two B.Sc./M.Sc. Degree Partnership in Chemistry

A partnership between the Chemistry Department and select European universities provides eligible students with a study exchange experience allowing for the completion of both Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) degrees. A brief overview is provided below with detailed information available at International Three-Two B.Sc./M.Sc. Degree Partnerships.

Laddered Degree Option (for UBC undergraduate students)

Eligible UBC undergraduate students have an opportunity to complete a B.Sc. degree from UBC and a M.Sc. degree from a Partner university. For further details, see Chemistry.

Consecutive Degree Option (for students at Partner universities)

Eligible students first complete a B.Sc. degree in Chemistry at any Partner university then complete a M.Sc. degree in Chemistry at UBC. In total, this requires three years of study at a Partner university and two years of study at UBC. Students apply during their final year of study for the B.Sc., and must meet the minimum requirements for admission to the UBC Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies. Students in good standing will have the option of transferring to the UBC Ph.D. program after one year.
