The School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) focuses on training the next generation of researchers and practitioners to generate new knowledge and to rapidly translate it into action to improve and sustain the health of the population.
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, SPPH draws faculty and participation from seven different faculties and two colleges. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines connects individuals and small research units, which enhances learning and galvanizes relationships between health research and health services.
The School focuses on four broad division areas with the aim of translating findings on biological, psychological, social, occupational, and environmental factors that influence health into improved health and quality of life for all:
- Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Clinical Public Health Practice
- Health in Populations
- Health Services & Policy
- Occupational & Environmental Health
SPPH also collaborates with the Provincial Health Services Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority, UBC-Okanagan, the University of Northern British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the University of Victoria, and four other regional BC health authorities to create a province-wide network.
This province-wide collaboration enables students and researchers in SPPH to engage with health authorities and communities throughout the Province, providing them with exposure to the range of complex health challenges facing BC.
The School is among the most research-intensive units at UBC in terms of competitive research funding and competitive career awards per faculty member. Students will have the opportunity to learn from and work with faculty who are renowned researchers in their fields of expertise.
The School offers graduate programs, a medical residency program and Undergraduate classes.
